When launching the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 W14 car earlier this year, Roll Nine, Genesis Media Productions and Over Exposed were able to build on the previous two years of collaboration by producing a fast-paced, entertaining and visually engaging content to complement Mercedes’ ambitious livestream revealing of their new F1 car to the world, for the first time.

This 100-strong crew production was assembled at Silverstone, the home of F1, to create an impressive collaboration of the best in multicamera, live production, staging, rigging, lighting and remote rig filming – leading the way in the industry.

The launch’s success was evident across all the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 social accounts, with the car reveal film generating 823,000 views on Twitter, 116,000 views on Facebook and 224,000 likes on Instagram.

Creating award-worthy content for Mercedes AMG Petronas F1

The Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 W14 Car Launch had several elements we needed to bring to life, including A Car Reveal Edit, A Chase Edit recapping the show and Media B-roll – all turned around on the same day.

In addition to the live launch, we filmed and edited a BTS. Our live-day Edit Team included a Producer and 2 Remote Editors alongside our Executive Produce. Meanwhile, the BTS Filming and Editing had a Producer, DoP and Editor.

The target audience for the social content was F1 fans of all ages looking for a short snappy recap of events, usually in case they’ve missed the live stream or so they can watch back the most memorable moments and share them with friends and family. We successfully brought the most exciting moments of the car reveal into the films alongside crucial information from each driver: Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, Mick Schumacher, and Team Principal Toto Wolff, alongside the Technical Teams working on the car.

To ensure the content we created would connect with their target audience, we had several conversations with the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 marketing team, as well as multiple internal briefings between the Roll Nine and Genesis Media production teams, to have a watertight delivery list as well as music and themes approved in advance.

We created bespoke visual effects and brand-themed animations, as well as colour washes to give the social content its own identity while being consistent with the fantastic broadcast footage shot, adding a social-focused edge alongside split screens, glitches and picture-in-picture effects to build engagement.

What it means to be nominated

Upon receiving news that they have been shortlisted for the award Kirsty Malcolm, Founder of Roll Nine, said:

“To create great content that audiences connect with is incredible, so to be recognised for this award is the cherry on top.

We’re a small part of a big live team, and we’d love to share the success of this project with the wider production team.

Often the crew behind the scenes aren’t seen or heard from, and we’re very proud to have given a glimpse into what it takes to bring a show like this to life and the talented and dedicated teams from various skill sets.

It’s also the chance to celebrate a collective of small and passionate teams and support smaller independent production houses, who can excel when they work together.”

Bafta-nominated International Multi-Camera Director and Founder of Genesis Media Productions, Jan Genesis, stated:

“To produce great content, you need a great team to work collaboratively and cohesively. Working with Roll Nine and Over Exposed for the third year running on the  Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 car launch demonstrated this.

Building on the past two years, we created great content that connected with Mercedes’ audiences and, most importantly, got them excited about the new F1 season.

To be acknowledged for this work by the UK content awards is significant. I feel honoured that Genesis Media Productions are being recognised alongside the Roll Nine and Over Exposed teams, and the other finalists.”
